For pity's sake

Lucifer stooped and picked up the halo lying at his feet. It was not hard for him to tell who this belonged to, though the depth of anger surprised. She stood with arms folded as he approached.

“So, you can see again?” he asked.

“All too clearly” she replied. “It is amazing how one can only see what one wants to see until one is forced to finally acknowledge what has been tried to avoid.” The resignation was almost enough to smother the anger, but not quite. “There are many things I will accept from the son of Adam,” she said. “But there is one thing I will not. And as that is the only thing on offer, I feel the time has come that I can finally change my focus. There is no need for that look Lucifer. Just because the words have been spoken previously does not mean they have been noted. Until now. The time has finally come, as we knew it would, that I can finally begin to turn away.”

“You will not accept the adjective?”

“In the name of anything, of course not!”

“Even for the sake of friendship?”

“Especially in the name of friendship. For what kind of relationship can there be when I can not even claim equality? I have little in self respect now, I will lose no more. That is one word I will not allow to be used for me.”

“So you will come with me?”

“Yes. As you always knew I would. I will give you my hand as I face to you, but I am yet to take a step. It will come, as we both know I will, but it is not quite time yet for that.”

“You still hold for some hope?”

“Of course not. I never had expectations that I would get what I wanted in this case. Still, it takes some getting used to. This has helped. Anger is a good counter for a lot of pathetic emotions.”

“I pity you.”

“And you are the only one I will accept that from.”
